Introduction to Heart Rate Training

Heart rate training, the best approach to all-around fitness. This isn't a one-size-fits-all concept. It works for a 20-year-old who wants to get fitter, a 30-year-old who has become more sedentary from too much time in front of a computer, and a 40-year-old who is preparing for the Ride for the Roses and wants to do their best. . It works for a 50-year-old triathlete who wants to improve their racing performance, a 60-year old with a family history of heart problems or a 70-year old wanting to improve strength.

One of the goals of your training is to improve your cardiovascular fitness. Heart rates taken during exercise indicate how hard your heart is working. Your heart rate is actually a motivating friend when you learn to monitor it properly, for this allows you to objectively detect beneficial changes which you can't otherwise see.
